Supermodel next generation: Crawford daughter fronts Young Versace

Following on from the launch of Young Versace's first store in Milan last month, the brand has unveiled its new advertising campaign with supermodel Cindy Crawford's 10-year-old daughter Kaia Gerber as the face.

Modeling designs adorned with the label's iconic Greek key motif, Gerber was shot by acclaimed fashion photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who have previously worked on campaigns for the likes of Gucci and Givenchy.

According to the fashion house's creative director Donatella Versace, Gerber proved she has inherited her famous mother's talent when modeling the collection, which is aimed at youngsters aged 0-12.

"Like her mother, Kaia has a very special gift," she explained in a release. "The camera really, really loves her.

"Having Cindy on-set for the shoot took me back to all the amazing Avedon shoots we worked on together. It was such a special treat watching Kaia walk in her mother's footsteps!"

Gerber, who is Crawford's daughter with former model Rande Gerber, is the latest in a recent spate of youngsters emerging as fashion's next generation.

Earlier this month designer Meg Matthews tweeted a photograph of her and British rocker Noel Gallagher's 11-year-old daughter Anais captured by Mario Testino. London-based Anais is signed with Select Model Management, and has already modeled for Paul Smith Junior. See her in the label's Autumn/Winter 2010 campaign here.

Other emerging faces for the future include Kate Moss's half-sister Lottie, who caught the world's attention as one of the bridesmaids at the supermodel's wedding back in July. The 13-year-old has already posed for her family's vintage clothing shop and has been captured by fashion photographer Andrea Carter-Bowman.

Even though it may feel as though we’ve been suffering through freezing winter weather for months now, it’s really only just begun! Although that thought is a bit depressing, what better way to brighten up cold, dreary winter days than with a great nail polish color that you wouldn’t normally be able to rock in the spring and summer months?

Below, I’ve listed the top four hottest nail polish trends for winter 2010/2011, to give you some inspiration for new shades to try! Read on to see them all.
1. Glittery Metallic

How can you not be completely taken with these gorgeous, glittery tones? Metallics have been spotted everywhere in fashion this winter season, but right now, it’s all about wearing these hues on your nails.

In my opinion, these shades are the best of both worlds: they bring the gorgeous sparkle of your favorite jewelry to your nails, allowing you to rock some bling without piling on the pieces. Plus, in these dark winter months, seeing a hint of sparkle as you glance down at your hands can give you a much-needed pick-me-up. Put blizzards and ice aside this winter and choose to sparkle instead!
2. Greige/Mushroom/Taupe

This is probably my favorite of all the nail trends this season. The “greige” (a mixture of gray and beige) nail polish trend began this past summer, continued into the fall, and is still super popular this winter. This trend just won’t die, and for that, polish addicts are eternally grateful.

These colors are beautiful blends of taupe, brown, gray, and sometimes purple. They seem to be universally flattering, and are truly the new it neutral. Plus, they go with every outfit and are suitable for work or class during they day, while transitioning flawlessly into night. These polish hues are definitely here to stay!
3. Super Dark, Almost Black

Okay, we know that dark nails are nothing new for the chillier months of the year, but what’s different this year is that those dark colors are super dark, and crazily close to black. The most-worn ones seem to be deep plum, dark graphite, and rich navy.

There are so many ways to wear this trend: You can basically pick any color and then find its deepest version! The shades above not your style? Why not try a deep red wine color, or a blue-green variation? If you’re feeling extra crazy, spring for some glitter or iridescence! This trend is incredibly versatile and that’s what makes it so great.
4. Icy Blues

This is probably the most unexpected trend for this winter season, but it’s surprisingly awesome. While blue may not be the most popular nail color on the market, this season it’s making a strong comeback.

You guys probably all know that Chanel has fast become a leader in the nail polish world, and, as usual, they can be credited with starting this trend, when they released “Riva”, one of our top beauty products for a winter wonderland. Ever since Chanel created this icy robin’s egg blue with subtle shimmer, it and its duplicates have been spotted everywhere – from magazines and runways, to my college campus.

Overall, ice blue nail polish is a fun and unpredictable look that will definitely set you apart from the crowd. I mean, how fun is it to wear a bright, shimmery color in the dreary winter months? Break the rules, and wear one of these blues next time!

Bamboo, a surprising fall hue, brings a warm, exotic flavor to the season. Like a filtered sunset on the waning days of fall, Bamboo is a standout yellow with a subtle green undertone. This dappled shade pairs dramatically with several of the top 10, including Phlox, Teal and Honeysuckle.

Radiant Emberglow, a traditional autumnal tone, emanates the warmth of a glowing fire – the perfect panacea to the crisp air of fall. Name a female celebrity, and chances are there are red-carpet photos of her hair in a braid. Spotted recently: Miley Cyrus with a skinny side braid. Blake Lively with a messy French fishtail braid. Jessica Alba in a headband braid.

Once a symbol of the plain Jane – think Melissa Gilbert’s long pigtail braids on “Little House on the Prairie” – the braid has been elevated to high glam. Fashion designers like Charlotte Ronson sent models down the catwalk with inspired plaits during Fall 2011 New York Fashion Week. When Christina Aguilera wore three mismatched braids on a recent episode of “The Voice,” Twitter was abuzz with comments about the star’s hair.

Braids are even becoming the hairstyle of choice among trendy brides; Brides magazine recently named Nicole Kidman’s bohemian style braid a “wedding hairstyle of the week.”

And now a “braid bar” may be coming to a city near you. Last week the John Barrett salon at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan opened just that. For $45, anyone can make an appointment to sit in one of the salon’s fancy chairs and have their hair braided. “It’s a good way to bring in girls who maybe can't afford to come get their hair cut and colored, but they can still come get a really cool new thing," salon spokesman Jenna Goldate told the New York Daily News.

Red carpet trends aside, the braid is a perfect hairstyle for summer. Here’s a guide to some of our favorite braided hairstyles:

Milkmaid braid: Soft, feminine, and pretty, the milkmaid is a braid that goes around the crown of your head. It’s also been called a headband braid, since the hair is sometimes braided to look like just that. Refinery29 has a great tutorial to get the look.

French braid: A French braid is an intricate hairstyle that starts with three small sections of hair at the top of the head and weaves more hair in as you braid toward the nape of your neck. Here’s a helpful how to from Allure Magazine.

Fishtail braid: A loose braid that typically begins just below the ear and uses only two sections of hair for braiding (rather than the usual three). The end result is a braid that mimics the scales on a fishtail – only sexy. Cosmopolitan Magazine offers a step-by-step guide.

Side braid: You can do this one in about ten seconds. Pull your hair to one side and begin a standard braid below the ear. The looser and messier looking, the better. Voila! Perfect for pool or date night.

Pigtail braids:While you probably wouldn’t split your hair into two and braid both sides for a formal event, pigtail braids are the perfect weekender hairstyle. Try it with a flowy sundress for a boho-chic look.

Transsexual model stirs Brazil fashion show

SAO PAULO (AFP) – Brazilian transsexual model Lea T. stole the show Sunday at Sao Paulo Fashion Week as critics applauded her presentation and paparazzi mobbed her entourage.
The model, previously known as Leandro Cerezo and the son of famed Brazilian footballer Toninho Cerezo, received roaring applause as she took to the catwalk modeling a new collection by Alexandre Herchcovitch.
She wore pale makeup and was accompanied by somber music as she helped present a collection of black, gray, beige and green gowns with long sleeves.
The paparazzi swarmed her entourage as she left the venue accompanied by friends, agents and bodyguards, with one photographer kicking one of her managers before she was spirited away.
The runway star, who has also modeled for the French brand Givenchy, has become a fashion sensation following high-profile appearances on the European market in recent months, including a magazine cover in which she appears kissing British supermodel Kate Moss.
The Brazil-born model left for Italy when embarking on her career, citing ill treatment and questions over her sexual orientation.
The 30th twice-annual Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) promises to showcase 31 home brands and set the stage for next winter's collection.
The runway stars include Gisele Bundchen, the Brazilian beauty who has become the world's top-paid model and is set to show off the latest creations of the brand Colcci.

Also at the event is US film star Ashton Kutcher, who arrived in the country late Thursday along with his actress wife Demi Moore.
Billionaire heiress Paris Hilton was also expected to hit the runway to model Brazilian fashion brand Triton, and singer Christina Aguilera was set to promote her new clothing line.

Fashion LA: L.A. Fashion Week stays in the couture game

CULVER CITY - Amidst a flurry of fame and fashion, designers, celebrities and style devotees gathered in Los Angeles for this month's Spring '09 Fashion Week.

An impressive list of internationally known and up-and-coming designers strutted their couture collections down the cities runways with Mercedes-Benz (in collaboration with SmashBox Studios) returning to sponsor the season's main events.

Highlights included designer Kevan Hall's homage to 1930's and '40's back-lot glamour, the modern cutout's of D'Amore by Marceau's swimwear line and an envy-inspiring collection by Lana Fuchs. Celeb-designer Lauren Conrad graduated to MB's main tent, while Eco-Ganik presented their casual lifestyle line to Hollywood's hip earth-friendly crowd.

Other events included GenArts 10th annual Fresh Faces in Fashion (hosted by actress Mandy Moore) and LA-based Junker's rock-n-roll inspired designs cavorting down the all-nude Platinum Gentleman's Club runway. LA-based artist collective Boxeight Studios treated its downtown audiences to an array of avant-guard designers, including a theatrical collection from Kucoon and a nostalgic trip through the 1950's and 60's with Idol Radec's menswear.

This season's unusual combination of throwback glamour and lurid presentation proved to be a winning combination, once again emphasizing the importance of Los Angeles' diverse couture climate and adding yet another stylish notch to this cities tightly cinched belt.

Changes to Come for L.A. Fashion Weekend

Mikey Koffman, the owner of The Gallery Los Angeles, a marketing and event-production firm, has announced that she will be moving her offices from the Cooper Design Space to the Sunset Gower Studios in Los Angeles’ Hollywood neighborhood. The move to the more than 2,000-square-foot space on the movie lot is in keeping with changes Koffman has recently made to her business.

Chiefly, she has ceased to represent brands as a showroom and will now focus on producing fashion shows. In 2011, Koffman’s L.A. Fashion Weekend event will morph into a week-long event with five nights of fashion shows, she said. The events will continue to be held at Sunset Gower Studios and will be produced in partnership with local Los Angeles television station KTLA.

Koffman, who made her television debut in 2010 as part of the Showtime reality show “The Real L Word,” said she is also grooming herself to be a television fashion guru. KTLA has confirmed that she will regularly be featured in an upcoming weekly segment, “Fashion Fridays,” during its 9 a.m. broadcast. And more television opportunities are in the works, Koffman said.

The Gallery is also planning an awards show that will honor Los Angeles brands and designers, Koffman said. The event, to be called the Los Angeles Fashion Week Awards, is set for November 2011.—Erin Barajas with additional reporting by Andrew Asch

1 bottle of solid nail polish
1 bottle of sparkly/decorative nail polish

Your first step is finding your base color. This is typically a dark shade, such as dark red, purple, or even black. Choose whichever brand you like, though professional and salon brands such as Opi and Esse tend to last longer and wear stronger.
Now it is time to choose your overlapping color. To create this fun and festive holiday look, this color must be a glitter polish, sparkle polish, or other such confetti polish. Many brands carry these variations and your local drug store or beauty boutique is sure to have a great selection to choose from. You can really be creative here, going from light and transparent glitter to full fledged confetti stars!
Once you have both polishes, it is time to apply the base coat of the dark shade. Remember, you should be careful when applying. Two coats is typically necessary, but three may be needed depending on the polish.
Once the base is dry, after about 5 minutes, it is time to apply the decorative polish. The thickness with which you apply this polish will have an extreme effect on the end result, so you may want to test one nail to know what your desired look is. Apply anywhere from one thin coat to several coats of your decorative polish, depending on the consistency of your polish and your desired look.
As with any nail color application, a top coat is of utmost importance. The top coat, applied on top of the last coat of decorative polish, seals in the style creating a shiny and lasting finish. This step must not be skipped.

SELLING, BUYING: The Oct. 23–26 run of Fashion Market Northern California attracted 200 exhibitors—the largest showing of the five shows on the trade event’s 2010 calendar.

Rainy weather cut into attendance at the Fashion Market Northern California trade show, held Oct. 23–26 at the San Mateo County Event Center in San Mateo, Calif., but it did not throw a wet towel on business for most of the trade show’s vendors, who were showing Spring 2011 merchandise.

Exhibitors noted a new confidence among buyers and retailers, who were shopping the trade show for contemporary and misses fashions. “The energy level was different,” said Lynne Andresevic of the Crayola Sisters showroom. “No one came in and said under their breath, ‘How is business at other stores? Is business bad for everyone else?’” Vendor attendance for the regional show was the biggest it had been for any of its five events during the 2010 calendar. The show featured more than 200 vendors, according to Executive Director Suzanne De Groot. Independent boutiques, mostly hailing from Northern California, shopped the show. Among those California retailers attending the show were Angelique Boutique of Sonoma; I-Elle, also headquartered in Sonoma; Twenty One Tango, based in Danville; and Heidi’s of Los Gatos.

Boutique owners interviewed said their business has been improving in the past few months. It was one reason why Catharina Levine, owner of the three-store women’s clothing chain I-Elle, said she increased her shopping budget by 15 percent over last October.
“Since the recession, business has been up and down. But the past few months have been steady,” she said.
Business has been up for Angelique Boutique, according to the store’s owner, Claire Samaras. With a weaker dollar, more foreign tourists are visiting her wine-country town. “We have not been marking down as drastically,” she said. “But we’ve been careful with buying. We don’t have the luxury of making a mistake.”
Many retailers said they were increasing their spending for inventory but only in categories that had been proven to be big sellers. “We’re not randomly buying,” said Michele Stone, owner of Twenty One Tango. The store’s buyer, Tamara Cardinal, said the boutique’s buying budget for the show was even with the same show the previous year. She also forecast that Christmas 2010 would be strong.
“People will always spend for gifts,” Cardinal noted, stating that the Christmas 2009 sales season was one of the strongest in Twenty One Tango’s history.
As for fashion, leggings and tunic tops were popular at Twenty One Tango. Leggings with cargo pockets have been popular at I-Elle. Levine said her customers have been more open to buying expensive items. “It’s a real mix,” she said. “They’re buying $500 coats and $59 sweaters on sale.”

Vendors reported good sales. Don Reichman of the Los Angeles–based Reichman Associates showroom said retailers demonstrated much more confidence about the future. “They were writing Spring orders,” he said. “They were ready to commit to the first quarter of the next year.” Reichman said his sales were even with the October 2009 market.
Crayola Sisters’ Andresevic forecast her sales would be even with last October.
Linda French, owner of the Linda French & Co. showroom, said her booth was packed with appointments with retailers and walk-ins. She said they responded to a mix of low price points and novelty looks.
Rainy weather on Oct. 23 and 24 forced some retailers to stay home during the crucial first days of the show, said Ron Kanar, sales representative for the Vancouver, Wash.–based Kanar & Associates showroom. “We did business,” he said. “It’s going to be a two-day show out of a four-day market,” he said.
Benjamin Zoldan, salesperson for fashion label Joseph Ribkoff, also thought traffic seemed slower. “I was expecting higher foot traffic,” he said. He was hoping to sell more Spring fashion at the show. “We’ve been selling a lot of Immediates,” Zoldan said.
The next Fashion Market Northern California will start on Sunday, Jan. 30. Reichman, the treasurer of the trade show’s board of directors, said beginning on Sunday will allow retailers to spend Saturday—often a crucial shopping day—in their stores.

The nail trends found on the runways at Mercedes- Benz New York Fashion Week were numerous, beautiful and oh-so-chic. Several major nail manufacturers and their skilled nail techs- such as OPI, Zoya, Dashing Diva and CND worked behind the scenes to make sure that each designer's vision was achieved from tips to toes. OPI made it's way onto the New York Fashion Week scene at the Cynthia Rowley show. Five nail techs were on hand to paint models' nails in a new dark hue that will be part of the OPI fall collection.

Zoya nail lacquer appeared on numerous runaways, including Project Runway winner Leanne Marshall's show, where she chose golden Richelle to enhance her collection. And at Ohne Titel, manicurist Jackie Saulsbery used Zoya Gretchen and Dea- both creamy tan nudes- to play off the sculptural pieces. Alisha Rimando, head nail tech for Dashing Diva, and her skilled team of nail techs were also hard at work backstage as they polished nails for 13 different runway shows. At Charlotte Ronson and Erin Fetherston, the Dashing Diva team used Jet-Set, a dark burgundy frost polish. Rimando also created a custom pink fade at Akiko Ogawa using Headliner, Dashing Diva, Cosmopolitan and Debutante.

And let's not forget the CND veteran nail team, who put their polishing touches on 51 runway shows during New York Fashion Week. The CND team custom mixed polishes for several designers including Diesel, where nail tech Amanda Fontanarrosa created a custom shade of dark chocolate to match the clothes, and at Karen Walker and Catherine Malandrino they custom-mixed shades of gray and mushroom enamel. Take a cue from the skilled nail techs at fashion week and create stylish nails to fit your clients' personal style.

Let’s face it, the Fall season is right around the corner.
The Fall usually suggests unspoken promises of a new beginning to your fashion sense, a fresh start. As the weather cools down, we immediately start thinking about our coats, jackets and boots wardrobe. A new season is a great opportunity to give you an attitude makeover. Take advantage of the cooler weather to improve upon on your overall look this season. Put aside about half of your black purses, hats, and coats and take a leap towards the latest color trends of this Fall.

During economic downturns like these, unemployment is soaring and people don’t know where to turn to find an income source. So, I thought how about doing my own thing, instead of relentlessly searching for nonexistent jobs. Now, the question was what should I do to earn some extra money while keeping my 1- year-old child out daycare

One day, by “coincidence”, I came across Darlene a good friend of mine from college who I hadn’t heard from in quite a while. During our fierce chit-chatting session, amongst many other things, Darlene told me she had started a small business. She was now throwing purse parties. I could not believe Darlene (who never struck me as a sales person) or business-woman-type was now a successful small business entrepreneur while I was still wondering what to do to make money. I was particularly surprised to find out she had already hosted about 15 of those parties at the time and she was ready for some more.

I kept in touch with her and learned a lot about how she did it. I saved some of her notes, researched some stuff on my own and decided give a try.

If you would like to start a purse party, read on and you will find the best tips on how to get the party started.

I like to use Evite.com to keep track of whom I invited and their responses online. www.evite.com When you invite 30 people you might get about 10-15 actually showing up. Be sure to pick dates that do not interfere with holidays, summer/winter vacation, etc.

5) Keep it fun! Take notes of what purses were more popular. Keep in mind your audience when purchasing. What snacks were more successful? Keep the parties fun and not too “salesy”. Make people feel comfortable and stock up on some nice products and sales will soar!
